Jennifer Seabolt has been the Development Director at LTHC Homeless Services since last fall. Formerly called Lafayette Transitional Housing, the name LTHC Homeless Services reflects what the organization does to help the homeless in our county. They are the social service agency to help those who desire to find permanent housing but are currently without a home. Lafayette Urban Ministry and the Salvation Army, as well as Family Promise, provide overnight accommodations for the homeless. LTHC provides a day shelter in the Howarth Center and help with locating housing. The reasons for homelessness are not just lack of funds, but are sometimes related to difficulty maintaining the living space in a proper manner. Mental illness, addictions and alcoholism all play a major role. Last year more than 1850 people were served by LTHC, which was a 58% increase from the previous year. It is sad to say that 533 children were included in this number. At the day shelter, LTHC provides meals, showers, use of phones and computers, and storage facilities for the clients’ belongings. The center gives out clean socks and underwear, always a great need with this population. There are a couple locations where housing is available: the Lincoln Center has 24 single units, a facility near 8th and Ferry also has 24 units and a location near Erie Street has 11 units. LTHC follows up with clients by providing case managers on site to help the clients be successful in their new living quarters to prevent them from becoming homeless again. LTHC is supported by federal dollars through HUD, VA dollars through veterans’ programs and the United Way.
