West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis highlighted some great new projects taking place in West Lafayette with the help of important strategic partners. The State Street project is a three-year, 120 million dollar effort that involves a unique convergence of local government, state government, an academic institution and private investment. Because of this partnership, developers have been and are interested in constructing residential and retail buildings in that corridor. There are multiple incentives in place to guarantee that the contractors will finish in a timely fashion. Another major new project is the Morris School that involves a partnership between West Lafayette and Sisters of St. Francis Health. The school is located on a piece of property that will be developed for a medical facility. The previous owner of the property, Mr. Casson, has gifted the city with fourteen acres nearby so that the one-room schoolhouse can be moved there as an historic site within a new city park. Another initiative that involves West Lafayette, Lafayette and Tippecanoe County is the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation. In previous decades the Wabash River was used for dumping waste. The WREC is working to make the river and riverfront a focal point and desirable destination in our community. The goal on both sides of the Wabash River is for our two cities to be viewed as one metropolitan area. In a time for Q & A, Mayor Dennis said that the old City Hall will soon be demolished and plans for a location of a new city hall will be determined soon.
