PROGRAM:

Marilyn Redmon, Executive Director of Right Steps Child Development Centers, spoke to us about one of their programs entitled Imagination Library. Marilyn Redmon Her presentation, titled “From Hunger to Hope Campaign” began with the statemenThis program was started by Dolly Parton in 1995 for her home area in Tennessee. The goal is to foster a love of reading and early childhood literacy by providing age-appropriate books to children less than five years of age. In 2000, this idea was expanded to other areas and there are currently more than 16,000 programs across the country and in Canada. Tippecanoe County began to participate in 2012 and there are currently 2,000 children registered to receive books. The books are mailed each month from the Dolly Parton organization. The cost is $25 per year per child to receive twelve books. The first book that every child receives is The Little Engine That Could. Right Steps Development Centers provide childcare for 300 children ages six weeks to six years. They have an afterschool program called Cool School and also the Childcare Resource Network which helps parents find quality care for their children.
