PROGRAM:

JIM TURLEY introduced Gary Steinhardt, Purdue professor of agronomy, who spoke to us about veterans organizations in Tippecanoe County and also about General Lewis Hershey. Gary Steinhardt There are about 10,000 veterans living in our area and that represents more than $24 million per year in pensions and disability payments entering the local economy. We have nineteen veterans service organizations in our county that work together through the Tippecanoe Veterans Council. This group organizes the annual programs for Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the Pearl Harbor observance. One of the veterans organizations that is quite effective is the Mary T. Klinker Veterans Center, housed in Lafayette Urban Ministry. The Klinker Center focuses on the needs of homeless and near-homeless veterans and serves about forty clients per year.

General Lewis Hershey was a Hoosier who lived from 1893-1977. He designed and implemented the selective service process that was in place for World War II, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam War. The process involved as many as 200,000 people during WWII working on the local level to select those who would be drafted to serve their country. During that war, about two-thirds of servicemen were drafted and the remaining one-third volunteered. During the Vietnam War, one-third was drafted and two-thirds enlisted. General Hershey was the only four-star general who never served in a combat role. The draft process that he designed was discontinued in 1973.
