Purdue Athletic Director Mike Bobinski introduced Sharon Versyp, women’s head basketball coach. Sharon was an outstanding player when she attended Purdue and has amassed more wins than any previous coach. Coach Versyp talked about the ways that recruiting has changed through the years and is now very competitive. It is important to recruit players that not only have skill, but who will be a good fit at Purdue where academics are important and a high level of integrity is expected. The leaders of the team this year will be the two returning senior scorers and two juniors. The team has more scorers than in the past. They face a tough opponent early in the season, the University of Maine where Versyp coached from 2000-2005. Coaches and team members are looking forward to playing three games in Cancun, Mexico during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Purdue men’s assistant coach, Jack Owens, spoke on behalf of head coach Matt Painter who was away on a recruiting trip. Jack has been at Purdue with Painter for eight years. Coach Owens talked about the team’s experience in Spain this past summer, which helped them develop skills and team unity. With the loss of A.J. Hammons and Rapheal Davis, the starting players will be Caleb Swanigan, Isaac Haas, Vince Edwards, P.J. Thompson and Dakota Mathias. The players have shown themselves to be skilled at offense, but must improve at guarding. Purdue is ranked among the top twenty-five teams in the country and have high hopes of winning the Big 10 Conference title this year. Boiler UP!
