PROGRAM:

Elsa Janle ELSA JANLE spoke about her trip to southern Africa during February of this year. It was a Road Scholar bird-watching trip. They saw 297 different birds, but her presentation focused more on other aspects of the trip. Their first two days were spent in Johannesburg where they saw the “land of contrasts.” They were able to visit the Pilanesberg National Park where there is a statue honoring Nelson Mandela, the first black head of state for South Africa. One disconcerting fact she learned is that the animals in this part of Africa are confined to preserves and are not found in the wild. The homes in the area were shacks because the land is owned by the tribes, not by individuals. Therefore, individuals cannot buy and sell home properties. Some of the animals ELSA saw were white rhinos, black rhinos, zebras, hippos and wart hogs. The visit to Victoria Falls included a helicopter ride to get a beautiful aerial view, and zip lining by the falls – a bucket list item for her. Way to go, ELSA! During a safari by the Zambezi River, additional animal species seen were: gnu, zebra, impala, elephant, Cape buffalo, lion and giraffe. Another interesting sight was termite mounds. ELSA was able to visit a school that had been built by Rotarians and saw the impact that our organization has had in this land far away.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

”Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”  From Maya Angelou
