PROGRAM:

Mary Gardner came with Gail Beck from the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association known as WALLA,Mary Gardner and Gail Beck and spoke to us about this local program that is an offshoot of the Roads Scholar program. The national organization was started in 1975 with the name Elderhostel. The name was changed in 2010 to Roads Scholar. They provide educational adventures for those over fifty years of age. The WALLA program began in 1993 and they offer intellectual, cultural and social opportunities. Currently, 28 classes are on the schedule, which begins October 17th. Classes are either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday for 75 minutes at a time. The cost is $75 for taking any number of classes during a given session. The session lasts for eight weeks, although some classes meet for only four weeks. Instructors are not paid, but simply enjoy sharing their knowledge with others. Scholarships are available. Courses are offered in history, creative writing, gardening, crafts, computers, and international policies, to name just a few. WALLA also organizes bus trips, luncheons with speakers, dinner theater trips, picnics, pizza parties, and frozen custard socials. The trips and special events are priced individually. They will have a three-day winter retreat to McCormick’s Creek State Park. Call 746-2006 or go to http://wallaonline.org for more information.
