Purdue Athletic Director, Morgan Burke, introduced volleyball coach Dave Shondell, who is starting his 14th season at Purdue and is nearing his 300th victory. Coach Shondell said that the summer Olympics always leads to increased enthusiasm for the sport. He praised the Boilermaker volleyball fans saying that often the matches are sold out with 2500 in attendance. Five seniors from last year’s team graduated, and current rankings for the team are low. However, that just serves to motivate the team to strive harder to perform well. The coach encouraged all to come out to watch the team. Darrell Hazell, Purdue football coach, was also introduced by Morgan Burke and praised for establishing a high standard of conduct for team members. The first three games in September will allow the team to build momentum and confidence before the start of the Big 10 season. David Blough will be the starting quarterback. A number of strong players are poised to be receivers. Coach Hazell commented on the quality of the academic support staff helping student-athletes be successful in the classroom. The coach concluded his remarks by saying that this year’s team is bigger, faster, and smarter than those of previous years and that they will definitely win more games! Boiler Up!
