President JOEL RASMUS gave us a report about his experiences in Korea where he attended the Rotary International Convention and also gave a presentation at a research institute related to his work at Purdue. JOEL and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed seeing Seoul, a city of 11 million people which was a mix of old and new. They saw a city gate built in the year 1361 next to very modern skyscrapers. Many Koreans also speak English and some expressed appreciation for what Americans did for their country. One such American serviceman was our own CHUCK HORNER. JOEL included photos that CHUCK had taken in 1952 interspersed with pictures of his trip in May. The Rotary International Convention had 50,000 attendees and many world dignitaries attended. A major announcement was made that polio will be eradicated this year! Coming to the end of this major effort means that Rotary will need to focus on new goals, yet to be determined. An important quote displayed often at the convention was: “The Rotary of tomorrow cannot, must not, be the same as the Rotary of today.” The next Rotary International Convention will take place in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017.
