PROGRAM:

LETA KELLEY introduced Jim Ridenour, who served as director of the National Park Service from 1989 until 1993.. Jim Ridenour The Park Service manages 80 million acres; 20,000 employees; and a 3 billion dollar budget. His secret to managing such a large entity was to surround himself with good people and let them do their jobs. Jim explained how they needed to cull the herd of buffaloes at Yellowstone during his tenure and that he achieved that with the help of the Bureau of Land Management. He participated in the 50th anniversary celebration at Pearl Harbor and enjoyed meeting author James Michener during that event. Jim’s goal as director was sometimes preservation of park lands, but always conservation of our rich national resources.
