PROGRAM:

PDG BILL HATFIELD introduced his good friend and our fellow Rotarian PDG SALIM NAJJAR, who brought photos of the Guatemala Project. Salim Najjar Each year a surgical team from Riley Hospital for Children goes to Guatemala (at their own expense) to operate on children with urinary tract problems. SALIM accompanied the team in November 2015 to be the photographer. Thirty five surgeries were scheduled – 44 were performed. Three operating rooms were kept busy for four days.

There is a history of children with kidney disease in Guatemala. Those who undergo the surgeries have a good rate of recovery. The only city is Guatemala City, so children needing dialysis must get there for treatment. They are then sent home with a time consuming process that keeps them alive for a few more months.

There is the possibility of a Global Grant to help more of these kids. The doctors want no reimbursement, but the nurses who don’t earn as much could use some help. There is also the cost of surgical materials.
