PROGRAM:

MARK DAVIS introduced Indiana 4th District Congressman Todd Rokita, who shared information with us using power point. Congressman Todd Rokita As vice-chair of the House Budget Committee, his is pleased with the fact that a budget passed both houses and was signed by the President. His slides of government spending point out that only one third of the budget is voted on by Congress. The rest is on auto-pilot.

Congressman Rokita was part of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which guts the No Child Left Behind program and gives states power over schools. The Transportation Bill, also signed by the President, has funds for local projects in our county.

Several questions were submitted before the meeting. He favors Health Savings Accounts to help decrease infant mortality in Indiana. The Child Nutrition Bill will be difficult to pass in an election year, but he hopes it will happen. The most important issue facing our country is the debt load. In response to the question regarding why wealthy citizens don’t pay more in taxes, he pointed out that the wealthy pay 90% of the taxes collected. As for illegal immigration, he thinks a wall using technology is needed and that the immigration system needs to be improved. Since the Highway Trust Fund runs dry every year and is supplemented from the general fund, he would like to see change in the way highway funds are raised. And finally he stated that he will support the candidate the Republican Party nominates for president.
