PROGRAM:

Standing in for CHIP RUTLEDGE, President JIM introduced Dr. Bruce Carlstedt, Prof. Emeritus, Pharmacy Practice at Purdue, whose topic was "Drug Interactions and Other Drug Related Problems". Dr. Bruce Carlstedt In a study of 3005 people, 81% used one prescription. He listed the problems of drug interactions and the potential risks when a patient uses more than 7 medications. There are problems related to adherence and compliance with lists of reasons why both may not be possible. Dr. Carlstedt feels that every patient should know the name of the medications taken; the intended use and action; the route, dosage form, dosage and administration schedule; special directions for the prescription and administration; common side effects; techniques for self monitoring; proper storage and cleaning; interactions; prescription refills; action for a missed dose; and specific information for the drug.

The book he recommends is: Top 100 Drug Interactions 2015: A Guide to Patient Management (Hansten, Top 100 Drug Interactions) by Phillip D. Hansten and John Horn.
