Following an introduction by Purdue Athletic Director Morgan Burke, Head Football Coach Darrell Hazell says the team is off to a great start. There are 12 days till kick off against Marshall – which is the only televised game that day! The team of 106 players has been working hard since January. Hazell proceeded to review the new and returning p layers, saying he would announce who will be the quarterback this afternoon. In response to questions from the room, he said the team is good depth; Marshall was undefeated last year, but lost their quarterback; the offensive team is much improved; we have the speed to outrun the defense; the face mask guard is the only rule change; scholarship players receive training table meals; he is not recruiting a quarterback for next year unless something changes; the coaches try to protect players who sustain concussions; Truitt will be a good player. He reminded us of the slogan for this year: All Aboard!
Burke reiterated that the team has really worked hard. He also addressed the scholarship issue, saying that the definition was recently changed by the NCAA, which allows players to receive more funds for items other than tuition and housing. He introduced Dave Shondell, who is beginning his 13th season as Purdue Head Volleyball Coach.
Shondell said he has a nice group of returning athletes with 5 seniors in the mix. He reminded us that the Big Ten Conference is the best for volleyball – which means every team is tough. There is lots of talent on our team and a championship is the goal for this year. He reviewed the players and answered a couple of questions having to do with facilities. Coach Shondell closed by inviting us to the games, which begin this weekend.
