PROGRAM:

DAVE LUHMAN introduced Tippecanoe County Prosecutor Pat Harrington, whose topic was “Heroin: Impact on Tippecanoe County”. Pat Harrington The epidemic of heroin usage is nationwide, topping the chart over heart disease and cancer in cause of death. It is used most widely by white people aged 25 – 30. Pat gave us the history of opiate use over the past 40 years showing several graphs. One of the interesting statistics is that the U.S. consumes 98% of all opiate medications with only 5% of the worlds population. The Mexico (where they are now growing poppies) to Chicago highway passes right by our community, making supplies easy to obtain. The dealers have a ready market, new laws relaxing penalties, and very few law enforcement officials to have to worry about. Indiana is a great place for drug dealers to do business. Pat answered several questions from members.
