PROGRAM:

JIM KLUSMAN introduced Sarah Gustafson, author of Pioneer Scientist, The Story of James Bert Garner, Gas Mask Inventor. Sarah Gustafson Garner, her father, lived from 1870 to 1950. Sarah was the youngest of his 12 children, from 4 wives. An energetic and ambitious man, he graduated from Wabash College in three years; earned a masters degree there and then a Ph.D at the University of Chicago. The chemical attacks on allied troops in World War I prompted him to do research to prevent the suffering. His many research opportunities led to twelve patents related to chlorine and activated charcoal. In addition to being a brilliant scientist, he had a joyous attitude toward life.
