PROGRAM:

JIM KLUSMAN opened our club assembly Club Assembly by reminding us that this month is the 30th Anniversary of Rotary’s fight for Polio Elimination. Polio is incurable by preventable. Rotary has contributed $1.3 Billion and countless number of volunteer hours in 122 countries. Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan are the only remaining areas where polio is endemic.

JIM reminded us that each member is responsible to be a money taker and to arrange for a speaker sometime in the next Rotary year.

ROB GALBRAITH, Chair of the Centennial Celebration Committee invited anyone interested in helping to make themselves known to him. The celebration will need participation by all.

CHRISTA KECK shared the unfortunate statistic that our club is at the bottom of the list in terms of Every Rotarian Every Year contributions. Only 30 members of our club have contributed this year. If you are one of the 125 who have not contributed to the RI Foundation, you still have 4 weeks to write a check or go on line.

JACK KELLEY, Chair of the Water Purification Project in Dominican Republic, emphasized the need to grow a fund to $7,500 so we can apply for a matching grant.

CHRISTINE BURR talked about how we can raise funds through GoFundMe. She will provide a well written invitation that members can put on social media accounts to spread the word to non-Rotarians. Contributions of $5 and $10 can add up if we get the word out.

BECKY ROBLEDO had ballots for us to vote for our favorite charity – because Old National Bank is giving $1,000 per location to the 501c(3) that received the most votes. We can vote often at the downtown branch (on Second Street) by popping in and filling out the ballot. What an easy way to raise $1,000 for our local projects.

JIM introduced DAVE SATTLER, a Rotarian since 1988, and asked him to tell us about the printing business. Dave Sattler Lafayette Printing was opened by Dave’s grandfather in 1920. His father and two uncles joined the firm after WWII. Dave started with the company in 1971 as sales manager. By the 1990’s, Dave was the President. Things were going well until the 2008 recession when sales dropped 40%. In 2009 a digital press was purchased for short run color work. In 2011 Lafayette Printing merged with a printing company in Peru and the whole printing business was shrinking.

In the meantime, the cartoons that he was hired by George Lamb to create for the Lafayette Journal and Courier in 1968 have suffered a similar fate. The newspaper business is on the decline. Therefore, he draws cartoon that relate to local issues that the J & C is still using with no guarantees that they will continue to be featured every Sunday. Keeping ends meeting in a time of great change and challenge speaks to Dave’s integrity.
