PROGRAM:

VICE PRESIDENT JOEL RASMUS, standing in for JO WADE, asked SCOTT RUMBLE to introduce Col. Douglas Schwartz, Grissom Air Refueling Wing, whose topic was “Impact on our Community and Nation”. Col. Douglas Schwartz Col. Schwartz opened by telling us that his father-in-law was Mike Kosman, a member of our club, who brought him to a meeting at MCL. The close connection for this Purdue grad made his presentation today extra special.

The 434th Air Refueling Wing Command is the largest group in the Air Force Reserve. In the video it was pointed out that there are 70,000 reservists with diverse installations and communities using the slogan, “Stationed locally, serving globally”.

In 1942 Bunker Hill was built to aid WWII efforts. It was renamed in 1968 to honor Gus Grissom, who died in a tragic space capsule fire. In 1994 it became Grissom Air Reserve Base. The air traffic control unit serves a large area of northern Indiana and assisted O’Hare’s tower when it was severely hampered by a fire.

The base has a $130 Million impact on the economy of the area serving base personnel and several civilian employees. Col. Schwartz reviewed construction projects, joint exercises with federal agencies and answered several good questions. To close his presentation, he asked that we help with recruiting young people.
