PROGRAM:

BOB GRIFFITHS introduced Indiana Supreme Court Justice Brent Dickson. Brent DicksonThis proud product of Gary, Indiana and the Indiana public schools system was Chief Justice and is a former member of our club.

Justice Dickson began by saying he and his wife loved their years in Lafayette, where they raised their three sons. His talk was titled, Reflection; but it really was instruction of how the Indiana court system works. He described the role of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the load handled by all of the courts in the state. Ten Percent of cases from the appeals court are accepted by the Supreme Court. Ninety Four opinions were issued last year by the five justices.

Justice Dickson gave a summary of the court agencies and responsibilities. An integrated electronic case management system designed by Purdue students and staff has increased the efficiency of police, various agencies, prosecutors and the courts. Representing only 0.85% of the State budget, Dickson feels the burden on taxpayers is minimal.

While he was Chief Justice, he divided the administrative responsibilities among the other justices. As a result, he prepared the group for his retirement.

When asked to describe one of his more interesting cases, he referred to a recent case between an adoption agency and the adopting family. A case that tugs at your heartstrings is still being deliberated.
