PROGRAM:

VICKI BURCH introduced author Angie Klink whose topic was her newest book, The Deans’ Bible: Five Purdue Women and Their Quest for Equality. The Deans' Bible cover She began by describing the book cover design, which is full of symbolism. The cover photo is of the five deans taken on the day BETTY NELSON was presented with the secret bible, after being Dean for two weeks. Angie described how that photo had peaked her curiousity many times and resulted in the creating of this book. The Purdue archives and special collections departments became her second home.

An introduction was made of each woman; what she did and how she arrived at Purdue. Angie KlinkShe also wove Amelia Earhart and Lillian Gilbraith into the story because of their influence on the deans. “Both gave voice to unthinkable thoughts.”, was the way Dorthy Stratton characterized them. The service of Dorothy, Helen and Bev during WWII changed the thinking of women and what they could do. They had to fight for a place at the table at Purdue, but eventually gained the respect of the leadership and the gratitude of the students they empowered. Barbara Cook joined the staff at the suggestion of Bev Stone. When BETTY NELSON came to town as a trailing spouse, she found her way to the Office of the Dean of Women and became a part of a very special group of trailblazers. Angie concluded her remarks with a video produced by her son, Jack, and then answered questions.
