PROGRAM:

JO WADE introduced John Collier, Director, Campus Master Planning at Purdue University, who gave us an update on the Master Plan for Purdue.John CollierThere have been three previous plans, the first in 1924, then 1986 and the most recent in 2000.  The last plan is constantly being updated.

The campus must be kept small enough for students to travel between classes in 10 minutes.  The small campus is also necessary for the steam heating system and the bus transportation system.

There is close cooperation between the City of West Lafayette and Purdue to plan changes that will benefit both.  Now that the state and federal highways no longer traverse West Lafayette and campus due to the completion of U.S. 231, these roads will revert to two lane city streets with ammenities that improve the feel of the space.

There were several good questions following John’s prepared remarks.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
"Apathy can only be overcome by enthusiasm and enthusiasm can only be aroused in two ways: First, an ideal which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice."  -- Arnold Toynbee
