PROGRAM:

RENEE ROAMES introduced Tyler Smith a sophmore at Harrison High School, who has been accepted into the Rotary Youth Exchange program and is going to Taiwan next fall Tyler SmithThe 19 page application in triplicate was the first hurdle. Then there was the interview and then the waiting. Good news came, allowing him to choose from 45 different countries, secure the signature of our club president and RYE chair, and attend an overnight party and information session with other outbound students, as well as inbound and re-bound RYE students.

The purpose of RYE is to provide high school students an opportunity to live in another country and promote world peace, one person at a time. The students are expected to adapt to the host families (usually 3 in an 11 month stay), learn the language, respect the culture, do the best they can in school, represent the U.S. and Rotary well, participate with the local Rotary Club and the community and submit monthly reports to the District RYE chair. There are 4 important rules: No drinking, driving, drugs or dating. Tyler is looking forward to the conference in July in Grand Rapids, MI and to receiving his travel documents. His goals are to represent the U.S. and Rotary to the best of his ability, promote world peace and inspire peple to reach for their goals. He answered questions about learning Chinese and using technology to keep in touch. If you want to keep track of him, he has a Facebook page called “A Junior in Taiwan”. PRESIDENT CHRIS presented Tyler with a club banner to present to the host club in Taiwan.
