PROGRAM:

President CHRIS called Vice President JIM KLUSMAN to the microphone to preside over the Club Assembly. Jim KlusmanJIM called to order a special membership meeting. He explained that the Rotary International Standard Club Constitution was changed by the last Council on Legislation. That fact produced a review of our Bylaws, where inconsistancies were discovered and changed. JIM reviewed the major changes to the proposed Bylaws and moved, with a second by TOM MORAN, to accept the recommendation of the Board of Directors and adopt the amended Bylaws. Motion carried.

The RI theme for this month is World Understanding. The January issue of the Rotarian Magazine contains a very moving article entitled, ‘I Am Malala’. JIM read portions of the article.

There are 2 objectives in our Strategic Plan:
1. Increase the involvement of all Club members in fulfilling our mission.
2. Attract and retain members, with an emphasis on younger members.

JIM reported conclusions of surveys noting that CHRIS has been making a big effort to compress the meeting time. We now have a meeting spread sheet to streamline the agenda while providing sufficient time for speakers. The club will try to have a member in charge of speakers for a month, with input from club members. There are guidelines for speakers.

Cards and pens were placed on tables to conduct an opinion poll. Each member was asked to give an opinion on how we should handle eulogies given three choices. The second opinion requested was related to the coaches luncheons. There were four choices from which members could choose.

The assembly ended with JIM reminding us of Robert Putnam’s book Bowling Alone and the conculsion drawn in it that it is bad for society to “bowl alone.” Trust and reciporcity builds in organizations. It is the way we attract and retain members. There is information about the book on the internet, if you are interested.
