PROGRAM:

LIZ SOLBERG introduced County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh, Tom Murtaughwho talked to us about the job associated with the position he holds. He is in the unique role of being one of three who run Tippcanoe County, along with Dave Byers and John Knochel. The County works well with both cities, Purdue and Ivy Tech to put together such projects as the Lindberg Bridge, Matchbox Project, Intersection Connection and Wabash River Enhancement Corp. The Commissioners operate all county facilities; maintain roads, bridges and drainage; determines zoning outside of the cities and towns, awards contracts, and is responsible for economic development. There is no “typical day”, with a variety of meetings filling most days. Current activities include maintaining Amtrak service, an ordinance for ATV road use, space issues in the courthouse and county office building, and a long term plan for the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. Recent successes include economic development in 2013, the intake and assessment center at the jail, wellness center for county employees and a hazardous waste collection center.
