PROGRAM:

SONYA MARGERUM introduced fellow Rotarian MARIELLEN NEUDECK whose topic was “Fracking in the Bakken.”Mariellen Neudeck On a trip to her home state of North Dakota to visit a Louis and Clark site, she encountered many changes due to the fracking boom. In northwestern North Dakota a modern day gold rush is under way as they bring the natural gas out of the Bakken Oil Shale deposit. MARIELLEN gave us the history of the oil and gas business and the research that has led to fracking in many states where oil shales exist. She also outlined the many pros and cons of the practice. But the realities of life in this formerly sparcely populated corner of the state startled her as she traveled a 4 lane highway that used to be a country road; took 20 minutes to get through a three way stop; and noticed a building boom in progress. Rents have skyrocketed; temporary housing is everywhere and “man camps” are housing thousands of workers. Along with the additional people come drugs (and the crimes associated with them) and strip clubs, complete with “babe busses”. The public infrastructures incluidng hospital emergency rooms, are completely overwhelmed. There are good jobs and high wages, offsetting some of the negative aspects of boom town life.
