PRESIDENT CHRIS introduced fellow Rotarian, GARY BLAU, whose topic was “Personalized Dosing for Cancer Patients – A Personal Journey”. He began by explaining his work history at Dow Agrisciences and Purdue University with statistical modeling. When he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (cancer of the blood plasma cells) and the first treatment involved nine chemicals, be remembered a very complex study he had worked on to improve fuel performance. That model was useful in studying a person’s blood to determine the proper dose of a medication. GARY invisioned a computer program on a physicians laptop which would take the patient’s blood data and recommend the proper dosage for that individual, instead of having to use the dose that works for an average number of patients. His study is successful. But the participants involved in our health care system (clinitians, pharma, FDA and insurance companies) are not interested. Because there are pediatritians at the Unviersity of California who are working on this issue, GARY feels that in time there will be changes. Following GARY’S presentation, several of the physicians in the room (GEORGE RAMSEY, FRED KUIPERS, BOB HANNEMANN) congratualted GARY on his work and spoke to the importance of individualized treatment. ELSA JANLE offered data she has been working with to further refine the model. |
