PROGRAM:

RENEE ROAMES introduced three members of the Purdue Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Jennifer Whistler, past Pres., received her degree from the Krannert School of Management and is a current Lafayette Habitat employee. Kristina Throne, VP of Fundraising Purdue Habitat, is a senior in biomedical engineering, graduating in May. Elaina Grott, Pres, Purdue Habitat, graduates in December in Entomology.

Elaina, Kristina, Jennifer

The three women took turns speaking to make an interesting presentation including the history of Habitat for Humanity (founded in 1976, has built 600,000 homes worldwide), the make up of the Purdue Chapter (200 members with an eighteen member board of directors), and their connection to Rotary (Gus Macker fund raisers for houses and Rotary’s projects).

The student chapter has three components – volunteering (every Saturday there is a house to work on), fund raising (bike rides spring and fall), and advocacy (campus events to make other students aware of the need). The group raises $55,000 to build a house. They get to know the families who are selected to buy the house and they enjoy the fellowship involved with the whole concept.

The Bucket 100, a two day, 120 mile bike ride between West Lafayette and Bloomington, will take place this weekend. They have solicited sponsorships, organized the entire event and prepared their bikes and bodies for the ride. Rotary is helping by supplying food and water for the SAG (supply and gear) stops, the first of which is in Stockwell. They thanked us for our support and answered several good questions.
