PROGRAM:

This was the All Service Clubs meeting hosted by Kiwanis with Purdue Basketball Coaches:
Sharon VersypMatt Painter

Sharon Versyp and Matt Painter.

Morgan Burke Morgan Burke, Purdue Athletic Director, began by saying that this is a big weekend with a volleyball game against Illinois in Mackey and a soccer game against Nebraska that evening. He introduced Sharon Versyp by saying she has a win record of 68%.

Sharon was recruiting all over the country in September. She is now home to coach this year’s team, which has three seniors who are great leaders. She reviewed the players saying the guards are the team’s strength. The first exhibition game is November 3rd. A tough schedule awaits them, so they will be tested early to prepare for the Big Ten teams. Purdue is hosting an NCAA tournament over spring break in March. There is a big effort to encourage students to attend the games.

Matt tells his players that they must do the right thing every day; to lead by example. He is proud of the graduation rate, most with a “B” average and four drafted into the NBA. There are successful graduates in many fields who played basketball at Purdue. He reviewed the new players saying he gets excited only when they do something. He is encouraged about the returning players because of their experience – good decision makers are necessary for a cereabral game. Purdue fans understand when the game is played right and it is appreciated. It is a more mature team than last year, although there are no juniors. He asks his players to perform well enough that people will pay to see them.
