PROGRAM:

President CHRIS JOHANNSEN’S International Convention report was titled "Meeting with 35,000 Rotarians in Lisbon". Chris Johannsen For a farm boy from Nebraska whose early education was in a one-room schoolhouse, this is an amazing number of people to engage in a meeting. Through a slide presentation, he showed an impressive flag ceremony where the platform for the flags was raised above the stage, making them visible at all times. The outgoing RI President, SAKUJI TANAKA, was on stage several times. CHRIS was able to have a short conversation with the General Secretary, JOHN HEWKO from Ukraine. Celine Cousteau, grand-daughter of Jacques Cousteau, is a proponent of “cause focused” story telling and says Rotary has an important story to tell. Ennanuel Jal was a child soldier in Sudan. Now a musician, he encouraged the audience to chant “We want peace.” Leyhaj Gowee, who helped end the Liberian civil war and is a Nobel Peace Laureate, spoke to the gathered Rotarians. Rotary Polio Ambassador, ARCHIE PANJABI, from India, talked about the work left to eradicate polio from three countries - Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. When asked his favorite memory, he thought it was when the audience was chanting “We want peace.”

Officer and Board Member Elections

Our Club Board has approved a new policy for the election of our Club Directors and Officers. This policy encourages nominations from our members for the position of Vice President* and any open Board positions. We will provide a Call for Nominations in early September for these nominations. A nomination for the election as a Director or for an officer would require the signature of at least three other members. Members may not nominate themselves. Persons nominated must agree to the nomination before the nomination is submitted. The Nomination should be received by our Executive Secretary no later than September 30th.

*Note: the Vice President will automatically become the President Elect and will be our Club President the following year.
