PROGRAM:

Daphene Koch, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Purdue University in Building Construction Management. She described Study Abroad service projects in partnership with Rotarians in Costa Rica. Similar in size to Vermont and New Hampshire, the country has 4.5 million inhabitants with 95% literacy. English is widely spoken in this Spanish speaking country. There is free education locally for the first six grades. The Purdue students have the opportunity to connect with Rotarians in Costa Rica; work on a 2 – 3 day project in a school; learn skills in communication, leadership, culture, language and problem solving. They also must work outside their comfort zone. In 2012 they painted and installed a tile floor in a cafeteria. The next year more tile flooring was installed and the exterior was painted at a different location. They knew to take more tools that time. Next year they will add local university students and Rotarians to the project by scheduling the work on a weekend. She answered several good questions following her prepared remarks.
