CONGRATULATIONS:
CHRISTA KECK presented new Paul Harris Pins, each with one sapphire, to VICKI BURCH and JANE TURNER. Both women believe in and support the work of Rotary International.
PROGRAM:

BETTY DOVERSBERGER and BARB REIF introduced six remarkable women and presented them with scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. BETTY thanked committee members JOHN BARRETT, CAROLINE BRIGGS, FLOYD GARROTT, ED GESWEIN, JEAN JACKSON, LETA KELLEY, MARIELLEN NEUDECK; ELDON ORTMAN, TOM PEARSON, NERLENE RAMSEY, BARB REIF, CHIP RUTLEDGE, DENNIS SAVAIANO, ANDREW TRAYLOR, PATTI TRUITT and PHIL TUCKER. BARB REIF introduced Christina Burr from the Ivy Tech Development Office.

Jana Parsons is raising five children while studying to become a registered nurse. While working in a doctor’s office, the doctor encouraged her to become a nurse. She loves motivating people and caring for others. Jana thanked us for our confidence in her. Accompanying Jana was her husband, Brewster Parsons.

Shaey Birchfield came from a difficult family situation. She has a daughter and is attending Ivy Tech with a goal to study health and human services at Purdue. One of her recommendation letters noted that she strives for excellence in all she does, noting that she will be an excellent social worker. Accompanying Shaey were Mary and CW W right and Oakland principal Clare Lutgen.

Ashley Pool is self supporting and paying for her own education at age 20. She is in the Dental Assisting Program at Ivy Tech and aiming for the Dental Hygienist program at IUPUI. She thanked us for allowing her to be able to focus on the task at hand and not worry so much about funds. Accompanying Ashley was her mother, Lynn Pool.

Cheryl Baber is the single parent of three children and she is in the Paralegal Studies program. Along with all of the responsibilities of motherhood and studying, she also finds time for community service. Accompanying Cheryl today are her children Jacob, Lexie and Katie Baber. She said the scholarship award means more than the funds to her. It validates her choices and allows her to be a good example to her children.

Kylie Schofield loves animals and cares about our environment. She came from a blended family with an abusive stepfather. She now lives with her grandparents. Kylie is viewed as a leader at school and volunteers at the zoo. At Purdue she will major in animal husbandry. The adversity of her childhood has helped to make her strong. Accompanying Kylie today was her grandfather, Herb Wingard.

Tyler Evans, a 25 year old, has already made several changes in her life. While a cosmetologist, she job shadowed in a dental office and is now studying to be a dental care professional. Her heart is in helping others. One of the others is her nephew, Micah Brock, for whom she has legal guardianship. She thanked us for what Rotary does internationally and locally. Accompanying Tyler were her husband, Colton Evans and Micah.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:
One of last year’s High School Scholarship recipients, Carissa Pekny, is home after her first year at West Point. She said West Lafayette High School prepared her well for life in college and in the army. She knows how to study, manage time, and make friends with a wide diversity of people. She is an environmental science major and intends to go to medical school to become a doctor.
