PROGRAM:

CHRIS JOHANNSEN introduced Dan McCain, President, Wabash & Erie Canal Association, whose topic was “Volunteers Make the Difference!” Dan and his family have been connected to the canal in Delphi for several generations.  It was his playground when parents of other children were admonished not to play near the rat and snake infested stagnate water.  In 1971 the Canal Association was formed.  By 1997 volunteers began working together three mornings a week and some of those original people are still showing up regularly.  They have built a swing bridge, the lime kiln, a static canal boat for the playground and a real canal boat for the canal.  They have moved an iron bridge and rebuilt lock gates.  By getting the kids involved in clearing trails and other manageable projects, they were able to interest the parents in rebuilding the canal as an attraction.  This brought in grant money from governmental and industrial entities.

Three miles of canal and ten miles of trails have been deeded to the park – which is run by a not-for-profit organization.  This is the 5th season for the canal boat on the water.  The park is operates every day of the year except winter holidays.  The next canal festival is Canal Days on July 6 & 7.
