50/50 RAFFLE:

JOHN BARRETT asked SUSAN HYCHKA to draw a ticket.  The owner of the ticket was JEAN JACKSON.  Unfortunately, the Aces eluded her so she received coupons from Dominos Pizza.

VOCATIONAL MOMENT:
DON “GUS” GUSTAFSON, a Rotarian for 55 years, told us he was born and educated in Columbus Ohio.  In 1959 he became the infectious disease specialist in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue.   At one point he wrote the curriculum for the school.  In addition to his work at Purdue, he was involved with organizations at the state and national level, including the CDC and USDA.  Gus’s international activities took him to Hungary during the Russian occupation and to Taiwan when there was tension there.  He turned down several administrative opportunities and summed up his career saying: “I had FUN!”
PROGRAM:

CHRIS JOHANNSEN introduced our own BOB HANNEMANN, reminding us that he received a degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue in 1952 and an MD from Indiana University in 1959.  He joined the Pediatric Department at Arnett Clinic in 1962.  BOB currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.   A video gave us an overview of the Center, which was started by President Reagan in 1984; is housed in Alexandria, VA; and has a 24/7 hotline.  Two thousand children are reported missing every day.  One in six are recovered, with the help of Amber Alert.   One in seven children are solicited on line for sex.  There is a nationwide sex offender list.   The Center is the leading organization for keeping children safe.

May is Missing and Exploited Children’s Month.  BOB gave us the statistics for Indiana and thanked the committee he chairs:  PHIL KLINGER, FRED KUIPERS, TOM MORAN, DICK RAHDERT, STEVE STUCKY, PHIL TUCKER, and included the work of DAVID BRIDGES as advisor to Rotaract.  He also thanked the school systems that are involved.  The goals include: educating the club and the community; facilitating work of the Center; developing a prototype project and involving Rotaract.   They have distributed information to 35 schools in Lafayette and West Lafayette and have prepared in formation for parents, children and teachers.  Rotaract has raised funds and helped with our backpack project.  BOB hopes to involve Rotaract members in “Teen Presenters” of Mini Lessons at Miami School.  He hopes to add more retail and corporate partners.  He ended by answering questions and sharing a poem by Helen Kromer.
