50/50 RAFFLE:

CHRIS BIANG asked JOHN BARRETT to draw a ticket. The owner of the ticket was DENNIS SAVAIANO. Unfortunately, the Aces eluded him so he received coupons from Dominos Pizza.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:
JACK KELLEY presented slides to remind us of the water well project in Pignon, Haiti. Five wells were dug at five schools to eliminate the need to walk for three hours for a glass of water. He introduced Gerald Joseph, principal of one of the schools, who thanked us for the wells and asked us to keep helping them.

PROGRAM:

CHIP RUTLEDGE introduced Paul Shepson, head of the Chemistry Department at Purdue University. He is also the head of the Climate Change Research Center. Paul introduced us to his family via photographs to explain his motivation for studying climate change. Scientists agree that the planet is warming and humans have caused most of the reasons for that change. Melting glaciers and sea ice are causing the oceans to rise. He showed models of Earth’s climate to explain the influence of natural forces and human effects. Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for 3,000 years. So to explain why the public is not “getting” what scientists are saying, he turned to social scientists, who say it is a cultural conflict of interest. The solution to that problem is to make the challenge of global warming exciting and profitable.
