PROGRAM:

CHRIS JOHANNSEN introduced Elizabeth Rose, Managing Director, Wolf Park, whose topic was “Wolf Park – 40 Years of Learning.” Founded by Erick Klinghammer to conduct animal research, some of the original staff is still working and learning. Wolves, foxes, coyotes and bison are kept on 47 acres. The park’s mission is focused on education, research and conservation. To socialize the animals, puppy mothers care for them around the clock at first and then others are brought in so that each animal has about 2,000 hours with humans. This facilitates vet care, research and exposure to the general public. The wolves are not frightened of people once socialized. All research is behavioral – not medical or physical. Over 18,000 visitors attend special events and educational opportunities each year. Since people come from all over the country and world, this generates about 5,000 hotel nights a year and is good for our local economy. They are a 501c3 organization with no government funding. Grants and individual donations keep the lights on. There are 40 volunteers. Expansion plans include a new building, a new enclosure for a second pack of wolves, socializing fox kits and adding staff. Several good questions were asked where we learned that the socialized wolves will not survive in the wild because they don’t know how to hunt. They are fed deer killed by automobiles or animals from livestock farms. Some of the research has shown that wolves are much smarter than anyone thought.
