PROGRAM:

JO WADE introduced Mary Caccavo, Lafayette Hearing Center, whose topic was "Hearing Loops-What Are They and What Do They Do?" Mary reminded us that hearing loss is very common - all ages experience it and it is one of the common birth defects. Hearing aids are the bifocals for ears. The most heard complaint from hearing aids users is the background noise caused by reverberation and ambient noise. Technologies called a loop and a T-coil in the hearing aid present the answer to these complaints. Her dream is to see all public spaces equipped with a loop. So far Blessed Sacrament, St. Mary Cathedral, St. Lawrence and Civic Theater are looped. It is an international technology and there is an internationally recognized symbol for it. Mary’s mission is to educate current hearing aids users; motivate audiologists to follow-up and to encourage architects to include loops in buildings. Classrooms, auditoriums, retirement community gathering places, tour busses, worship centers, theaters, pharmacies and elevators is just a short list of places that need to be looped. The loop is the equivalent of a wheelchair ramp for those whose disability is hearing loss. The cost ranges from $250 - $500 for a home and $2,500 - $6,000 for a church with a basement. Several good questions were raised by this interesting presentation.
