50/50 RAFFLE:

CHRIS BIANG asked BECKY ROBLEDO to draw a ticket. The owner of the ticket was JIM BODENMILLER. Unfortunately, the Aces eluded him so he received a coupon for Dominos Pizza.

BITYHDAY TABLE:
DAVID LANDGREBE introduced members celebrating another year and announced that so far $1,200 has been contributed to our Foundations. We sang Happy Birthday to thank them.
PROGRAM:

CHRIS JOHANNSEN introduced our own BOB VERPLANK, whose topic was “The Second Great Flood”. One hundred years ago this month rain filled up rivers over a wide area of the Midwest. BOB read a poem by Brent Clary before showing photos and post card pictures of Lafayette at that time. He listed businesses that existed and described how we lived in 1913. Although water is essential for life, too much all at once causes great destruction and hardship. BOB had many interesting photos of the Wabash River in downtown Lafayette and across the river in West Lafayette. The newspaper headlines expressed the suffering experienced. Because the bridges were destroyed (except for the railroad bridge which still stands), a ferry service went to work transporting people and goods across the swollen river. The Brown Street Bridge was restored in three months.

The State of Indiana had just made “On the Banks of the Wabash” the state song. A wag from Attica replaced words to reflect the effects of the flooding Wabash that year, which our talented music committee sang to us.

Coaches Luncheon for Service Clubs
Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Purdue’s Athletic Director, Morgan Burke, announced that the first football game of the season will be in Cincinnati on August 30th before introducing new Head Football Coach, Darrell Hazell. The coach opened by saying that the players, coaches and community need to be a team for success in “The Furnace” (the stadium’s new nickname). He named the new coaches who will assist him, saying they are humble, great teachers and leaders, accountable. Seventy-five percent of the players will be from Indiana. This makes it easier for family and friends to attend games. The coach also reminded us that we have to show up for all 7 games – even when it’s cold. Practice has begun and most sessions are open. If you get in the way, expect to be knocked down. For the schedule, go to this page:
http://www.purduesports.com/sports/m-footbl/specrel/031213aaa.html

With two more schools added to the Big Ten, there will be changes in the schedule. The quality of the schedule needs to be even among the school.

Coach Hazell will have between 107 and 110 players, with 85 of them on scholarships. He expects them to be respectful, obtain a meaningful degree and be quality citizens.

He encouraged everyone to meet the players on Fridays on the Bridge and to fly Purdue Flags throughout both cities.
