PROGRAM:

BARB REIF introduced Jasmine Dowd, Program Coordinator, Domestic Violence and Prevention at the YWCA, whose topic was “Domestic Violence in our Community”. She presented a senerio of an abusive situation where there is a loss of family, friends, job, faith, home, sense of self, and community. The YW helps victims find a job, housing, friends, child care and counseling. There is a 24 hour hotline and a shelter with 24 beds (estabilshed in 1979). Victims are provided with food and clothing; job training, classes for self esteem, conflict resolution and legal advocacy (protective orders). This is funded through grants and contributions from groups and individuals. Women comprise 85% of victims. The remaining 15% are men. Since children grow up in abusive households and learn that it is normal, Jasminie is seeing second and third generation victims and abusers. Most abusers are charming; great actors. They have wonderful public personas, mean private personas.
