50/50 RAFFLE:

CHRIS BIANG asked TIM LUZADER to draw a ticket. The owner of the ticket was TOM MORAN. Unfortunately, the Aces eluded him and he received a gift certificate for Sunspot Natural Market as consolation prize.

VOCATIONAL MOMENT:
ARVID OLSON traveled the state of Michigan as his father gave speeches (often to Rotary Clubs) concerning workplace safety. He was instrumental in saving many lives and the precursor to OSHA. ARVID came to Purdue for grad school. In 1997 he moved to Boise, ID to accept a promotion. However, by 2003 his friends had lured him back to Lafayette, where he became the Development Director for Faith Church. The church’s mission, which aligns with ARVID’S passion, allows him to contribute to the community. He has a son and two daughters.
PROGRAM:
CHRIS JOHANNSEN introduced Wil Painter, a Civil Engineer involved in Engineers Without Borders (EWB), whose topic was “Sustainable Safe Water Supply Mayanja-Kibuke, Kenya”. Engineers Without Borders has 93 professional and 201 student chapters. They take on projects that are sustainable with locals involved in the task of building and maintaining the installation. One of the projects is in central Dominican Republic where multiple villages needed a day care clinic and medical team. Part of the project was building a septic tank. The locals built three more in the six weeks after the EWB team left. Part of this project is a fairly sophisticated building able to withstand 120 MPH winds.

In Kenya, women carry 44 pounds of brakish water on their heads five kilometers every day. The wells are unprotected, so the water is not safe to drink. They built a general spring box to provide a protected water source. The locals are trained to do maintenance. He says this is a highly rewarding expereince – paying forward, if you will.

STUDENT GUESTS:

FRED KUIPERS introduced Abby Wilson and Sam Kochart from Central High School. Each received a certificate and a travel mug with the 4-Way Test to commemorate meeting with us.

GUESTS:
