PROGRAM:

At our joint Meeting with Kiwanis for Thanksgiving ELSA JANLE introduced Dr. Connie Weaver, Nutrition Science Dept Head at Purdue, whose topic was Women's Health Initiative. The College of Health and Human Science and Discovery Park are partnering on a project to study women's health with a focus on prevention of several diseases, among them bone health, heart disease, degenerative diseases, cancers and wellness. Sally Field is the poster child for osteoporosis, which will cause one in three women over 50 years old to experience a fracture. Interventions are being studied. Betty Ford is the face of Breast Cancer and Kathy Bates the face of Ovarian Cancer. Nanoprobes help in understanding the metabolism of cancer cells. Indiana has the largest healthy breast tissue bio bank. International teams are stationed throughout the world to study different diets and genetic profiles to find connections to cancers. Neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson's disease are under study. And under wellness comes the study of absorption of dietary fat and it's relationship to hear disease. Breast-feeding has become another public health priority. Dr. Weaver answered several good questions related to diet and cancer risk, obesity and breast cancer risk, high fructose corn sugar's effect on health and ended with the advice to eat blueberries and dried plums (no one says prunes anymore) to prevent disease.
