CONGRATULATIONS:

RICHARD BARTHOLOMEW, President of the Lafayette Rotary Club Foundation, presented AL REBAR with a Golden Service Certificate recognizing his contribution to the Foundation in the amount of at least $1,000.

VOCATIONAL MOMENT:

VOCATIONAL MOMENT FISHER, 3rd generation funeral director and relatively new Rotarian, grew up above the chapel in Logansport. After attending college to become a licensed funeral director he helped his manage the Lafayette Chapel beginning in 2006. His father died in 2009, which doubled his responsibilities. He outlined the duties of a funeral director and introduced his wife, who will deliver their first child early in January.

PROGRAM:

CHIP RUTLEDGE introduced fellow Rotarian ALAN REBAR, Vice President, Purdue Discovery Park, whose topic was "A Paradigm for Interdisciplinary Research". Purdue's past president Martin Jischke said Discovery Park, which began in 2001 with a Lilly Endowment Grant on 40 acres in the heart of Purdue, is an interesting experiment for Purdue. . It represents Purdue's hub for interdisciplinary research. AL described the eight core centers housed in five buildings. He explained the relationship between Purdue Research Park and Discovery Park saying that Discovery Park is the incubator for the incubator (Research Park). He described the infrastructure, some of the awards received, a few of the projects and new initiatives and the goals. Three accomplishments include the absence of any mortgages on the buildings, the partnerships that have been built and the student involvement. Future plans involve health care studies; partnerships with the Universities of Wisconsin and Michigan who now have similar facilities; enhancing the facilities and expanding the entrepreneurial opportunities.

SUSAN HYCHKA introduced Mary Grace Erickson and Sam McKay from Jefferson High School. Each received a certificate and a travel mug with the Four-Way Test to commemorate meeting with us today
