PROGRAM:

Today's meeting was the joint service club Coaches Luncheon, hosted by Kiwanis. Almost 100 people (58 Rotarians and guests of Rotarians) were present to hear Kiwanis President Janet Ainsworth introduce Tom Ryder, who was standing in for Morgan Burke. Tom introduced Sharon Versyp. In her 7th season as head coach of women's basketball at Purdue and her 13th season as a head coach, Sharon opened by talking about the buzz you get when recruiting season begins. She expressed appreciation to the high coaches from whom she learns new drills, since drills need to be changed often due to the ever-shorter attention span of students. Five seniors graduated last year, but the remaining seniors are strong. She reviewed the players, noting that the team is lacking depth, so freshmen must play. It's a tough conference, making it impossible to predict wins. She is looking forward to an exciting season.

Tom introduced Matt Painter, head coach for Purdue Men's Basketball for the 8th season. Matt explained that not all players get to play the role they dream of. Because coaches choose the best for the position, young players have lots to learn, and they must be productive. Coaching means making talented young players mature quickly. Rebounding and turnovers tell the tale of the game. He reviewed the players saying the seniors look strong. They have a good schedule to get ready for the Big Ten. He's looking forward to big challenges.
