ROTARY MOMENT:

JIM KLUSMAN presented a slide that showed two lines. The line representing membership is going down and the line representing average age of members is going up. He reported that the Board of Directors believes that something needs to be done to change those lines. Two strategies that are currently in the works are:

  • 1. Increase involvement of all Club members in fulfilling our mission. This involves reducing the size of the board gradually and modifying Club Committee Structure.
  • 2. Attract and maintain members with an emphasis on younger members. This involves modifying the Tuesday meeting format to appeal to a broad range of members.

The details of these strategies are on the District Database called Dacdb. It can be accessed from the District 6560 website. If you need help finding the location of the documents, ask JIM or JANE for the instructions.

PROGRAM:

TERRY WEST introduced Robert Haan, whose topic was "The Hoosier Group of Painters, T.C Steele and Others". Bob and his wife, Ellie, collected works of art from 1992 to 2000 from the Indiana Artists group. The extensive collection hangs in their beautiful home on State Street. The home was part of the St. Louis World's Fair before being transported to Lafayette. He shared some history of the different categories of painters between 1810 and 1910. The Indiana Artists that they collected are Theodore Clement (T. C.) Steele, J. Ottis Adams, Otto Stark, William Forsyth, and Richard Buckner Gruelle. He showed thirty-one slides of paintings that they own which were products of these five men, explaining the aspects that they enjoy and telling a bit about the paintings. We especially appreciated this program and the commitment to give it one day before the funeral of Bob's mother.
