PROGRAM:

ROB NOLL, chair of the Two Year College Scholastic Awards, introduced Dr. Todd Roswarski, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Ivy Tech, noting that the Ivy Tech students honored today are a fine example of the school's impact on education. The 8,000 students enrolled locally are enrolled in a broad range of subjects, but many are non-traditional students who are upgrading skills to fill needs in the workforce. They work part time or full time, have children; and are often the first in their family to attend college.

The two-year scholarship program began several years ago when BETTY DOVERSBERGER suggested there was a need for more educational awards than the high school scholarship recipients. Four students received awards of $1,000 each.

Nichole Lewis is studying to become a paralegal. She enjoys research and thinks that could be an asset in a prosecutor's office. Her goal is to provide a better life for herself and her eighteen-month-old son.

Kristina McKinney is a nursing student with the goal of becoming an RN. Past jobs have included cosmetology and working as a CAN in Mulberry. Kristina keeps busy as the mother of an eight year old and a four year old as well as working two jobs. She enjoys learning new things and feels she could find work as an RN wherever she moves.

These ladies thanked the club in their short remarks. Not present were Mildred Geise, a nursing student with two young boys; and Dale Sargent, a computer- networking student. Dale is changing careers after the recent recession left his contracting business with too little to do.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

To commemorate this college and university graduation time, our Thought for the Week comes from Former President George W. Bush, who included this quote in his address to Yale University graduates on Monday, May 21 2001.
"To those of you who received honors, awards and distinctions, I say, well done. And to the "C" students, I say, you too can be president of the United States."
