PROGRAM:

TERRY WEST introduced Seth Maxwell, originally from Crawfordsville and Indianapolis, who is founder and CEO of The Thirst Project, a nonprofit committed to solving the world's water crisis. He very convincingly tells the story of the shortage of clean water in many parts of the world. Some numbers: 3% of the water on earth is available to the world's population; average American uses 150 gallons per day; 5 gallons per day is what is available to people in water poor areas; 4,400 children die every day from water related diseases. Many women and children spend their days walking miles to collect polluted water in 5 gallon containers (weighing 44 pounds each). Seth's organization is working in eleven nations to provide clean water from wells. They hire local well diggers, providing the water so that children can go to school and women can work to earn funds to help support the family. For more information click here and and here.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

This week is "Dead Week" on the Purdue campus, with most students busily preparing for their finals. Here is advice to those very students: 1. If you are given an open-book exam, don't forget your book. 2. If you are given a take-home exam, don't forget where you live, and 3. 80% of the final exam will be based on the one lecture you missed . .. so talk to a classmate, and on the one book you didn't read. Go home and start reading.
