PROGRAM:

TERRY WEST introduced Kentland Rotarian KEVIN WILEY, who introduced Dr. Sara Imhof, Midwest Director of the Concord Coalition, whose topic was "Health Care Policy and the National Debt." The Concord Coalition is a non-political, grass roots education and advocacy group that focuses on health care. It was founded in 1992 to study the finances of the Federal Government. She opened with the debt to GDP ration graphic showing that today the U.S. Government is $15.6 Trillion in debt. That amount increases $3.8 Billion every day. This is caused by health care costs, an aging population, growing interest costs and insufficient revenue. Dr. Imhof proceeded by explaining that the U.S. Budget allows for more spending than income. The most expensive and mandatory programs that are social security, Medicare and Medicaid, consuming 40% of the budget and growing. Americans want to cut costs, but not on the biggest three programs. There are bi-partisan solutions to the problems, allowing everyone to bear some of the pain.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

With Easter weekend approaching, I dedicate the Thought for the Week to my late father, who once made an unfortunate discovery when he pulled his dress shoes off the top shelf of his closet for a December wedding. It's GOOD News when you find Easter eggs at Easter. It's BAD News when you find Easter eggs at Christmas.
