PROGRAM:

PRESIDENT TIM introduced Kendall Smith, Executive Director at Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, and Sue Carr, Co-President of the Art League who presented a very interesting overview of the accredited museum, which began in 1909 as the Lafayette Art Association. It is privately funded by membership, gifts, grants and many fund raising activities. The doors are open every day of the week from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m. The three-part mission includes collecting, preserving and understanding art; displaying art; and art education. A faculty of nine art teachers offer classes to about 400 students. Scholarships are available. Creation of flexible classrooms in the educational area will allow for a 25% increase in enrollment.

Sue talked about the partnership with schools and the information on the web, which makes teaching art something that can occur nearly anywhere. The outreach program serves a fourteen county area. The next public art project is "Chair-ity". Chairs will be transformed into works of art and will be exhibited throughout the community in the summer of 2012. To sponsor a chair, please contact Kendall Smith at 742-1128 Ext. 103 or e-mail: kendall@artlafayette.org

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

The thought for the week was inspired by NCAA Basketball Tournament that started today. "A university psychology professor was lecturing on mental health and manic depression when she asked the class - How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of their lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next? A young man answered - a basketball coach.
