PROGRAM:

PRESIDENT ELECT TERRY WEST introduced fellow Rotarian MICHAEL HUNT, a retired professor of wood science at Purdue, whose topic was "Transition in Historic Centennial Neighborhood". Using a time line, MICHAEL, pointed out that from 1829 - 1993 the 32 block square area was in the Rise and Decline stage. Platted in 1829 as the first addition to the town of Lafayette, with the Wabash and Erie Canal and later the railroad traversing it, many of the most important families in Lafayette built family homes between the 1850's and 1870's. By the 1940's the families left the large homes and the area became a backwater. From 1993 - 2000 the neighborhood was re-created. Investors with imagination began restoring the old homes. Rezoning (down-zoning) and the removal of the railroad tracks on 5th Street improved the prospects for investment in the area. Between 2001 and 2007 a duplex was saved and Centennial Park was created, along with the successful Hollyhock Festival, popular with neighborhood families. Since 2007 more properties have been saved and ten neighbors have invested in an LLC to improve the Midwest Rentals property. The property has been purchased and a contract been let for site development. Marketing for the residences has begun, and anyone wishing to purchase a townhouse should contact MICHAEL! This neighborhood is like a Phoenix - a magnificent bird rising from the ashes.
