PROGRAM:
CHIRS JOHANNSEN introduced John Norberg, who has written a book about Purdue Bands. "The Heartbeat of the University", with help from Kathy Matter. In 1886, 125 years ago, a group of students started an informal band, which soon found itself keeping cadence for the ROTC marching units. The first director was a student who just stayed with the university and the band. Paul "Spotts" Emrick put the band on the map and kept the traditions coming until 1954. He was also a Rotarian, serving as president in 19433-44. Al Wright from Florida was hired to replace the famous "Spotts", and brought his ability to make magic to the band. Wright became a member of Rotary in 1954. John had several wonderful stories to tell and signed books at the end of the meeting. |
