PROGRAM:

Athletic director Morgan Burke opened the program with an update on Purdue's athletic programs. He talked about this Saturday's homecoming festivities. The parade will be Friday night. It will begin at Morton Center and end at Slayter Center. Purdue football is striving to embrace the entire Lafayette/West Lafayette community. Danny Hope and the football team will be at Slayter Center for the homecoming queen coronation.

Women's basketball coach, Sharon Versyp, was introduced by Morgan Burke. She commented that today's weather made it 'feel' like basketball season. They have a veteran team this year with six returning seniors. The advantage is that the veteran players are like coaches on the floor. They help younger players adapt to Purdue's style of play. She also applauded her players for their fine character and their efforts to 'give back' to the community.

Lastly, Morgan Burke introduced head basketball coach Matt Painter. Burke announced that Painter is fourth in basketball coaching wins for the university. Painter discussed the difference between a good recruiting class and good players. You can have a good recruiting class, but are they good players? Can you count on them? Are they disciplined? There are intangibles that don't show up on the stat sheet; like, do they really want to play? Painter said that another coach couldn't believe that Purdue recruited Chris Kramer. That coach believed Kramer would never play Division I basketball. According to the coach, it is hard for young players to develop behind two All-Americans, Johnson and Moore, because they don't get any playing time. Coach Painter is excited about the season and about working with a good group of guys.
